Bucket List: I want to photograph the Northern Lights

As our next trip to Glacier National Park
rapidly approaches (and the bed in my guest room becomes more and more
cluttered with the gear I’ll need to pack), my “want to do list” keeps
getting longer and longer…

I want to:

  • Spend lazy days on the lake
  • Rock climb Lizard Ledge
  • Eat lavender ice cream
  • Hike the Grinnell Glacier trail
  • Eat at the Buffalo Cafe
  • Shop the amazing local artists at the Whitefish Farmer’s Market
  • Ride the lifts to the top of Whitefish Mountain and soak in the view
  • Mountain bike down Whitefish Mountain
  • Drink huckleberry milkshakes
  • Go star gazing at Logan’s Pass and photograph the Northern Lights [Bucket list!!!]
  • Hike up Logan’s Pass and down to Hidden Lake and back again.
  • Spend the night at the Many Glacier Hotel and pretend I’m in The Great Gatsby
  • Sleep in sleeping bags
  • Hike to Ptarmigian Falls
  • Take glorious photos
  • Hike some more
  • Take even more photos
  • Breathe in the mountain air
  • And enjoy every moment

Even
though I’m east coast born and raised, I’m a westerner at heart and
there is something about the old west that pulls at my soul. Maybe it’s a
memory from a past life that makes it feel familiar to me, or maybe
it’s just the mountain views and the cool air that I crave. No matter
what, this yearly pilgrimage is like balm to my soul.

Almost time to lace up the hiking boots.
I can’t wait.

Hang Ten, Brah

After getting rained out on Friday, our surf lesson finally happened on Sunday morning.

We met Dustin from Saint Augustine Surf School on Crescent Beach for the first surf lesson either of us had ever taken in our lives.

I’ll tell you right now, for me, this was a humbling experience.

For my Soul Sista…well, she snapped to her feet like a jungle cat and rode her very first wave all the way to shore.

Little booger.

I fell off my surf board approximately 535 times before finally figuring out how to stand up.

And then I rode a few waves all the way into shore too.
It was a good day for us both. I just had a slower start. ☺

This photo would be so much better if my eyes were actually open (doh!)

Where I Roam

According to his website, Dustin is the owner and head instructor of Saint Augustine Surf School and has been coaching people how to surf since 1998. He may be a surfer first and an instructor second, but I found him to truly possess the gift of teaching. He understands that successfully instructing someone is both a physical and mental endeavor.  There was no doubt in his mind that I’d be able to surf during our lesson, and therefore no doubt in my mind either.

I’m probably not meant to be a world class surfer, but I’m certainly looking forward to seeing Dustin again and giving surfing another try. I think the All Moms Surf Camp has my name written all over it.

Paddle Board Yogis: SUP Jax

One item that’s been on my personal bucket list for quite some time is paddle board yoga.

Black Creek Outfitters in Jacksonville hosts a SUP (stand up paddle board) yoga class every Saturday morning on Lake Skinner, directly behind their store.

These photos were taken during our class:

I am so glad we gave this a try! I love yoga, have practiced for years, but had never tried paddle boarding before. Somehow, amazingly, I made it through the whole hour-long class and didn’t end up in the lake (and actually did some yoga.)

Shocker! I know!
(however, you will not find me doing any inversions in the above photos.
I’m saving that for next time.)

Where I Roam

At the end of class, our fabulous instructor, Kate, gave us time to
practice on our own and pose for a photo op.

This photo was miraculously
taken in the millisecond that we were both in “tree pose” at the same
time.

Literally .0005 seconds later, we looked like this:
